Esquisse were asked to assist Mubadala to develop a brief for the Abu Dhabi Finance Centre (ADFC). The Project Facilitation and Strategic Vision processes informed the Project Definition, creating a comprehensive brief for the design team to move forward with. The site was located at the centre of Abu Dhabi’s main island.

The ADFC Strategic Vision is an urban mixed-use development comprising of high end retail, commercial offices, residential apartments, hotels and indoor rooms and layered garden terraces. The project responded to local climatic conditions by creating a new internal “city room” being the only concept of its kind in Abu Dhabi. Value added features such as brokerage offices, auditorium, trading rooms, training facilities and Business Centre were also accommodated into the brief. These features were incorporated to support the Securities Market, the Security & Commodities Authority and the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange.

This Strategic Vision informed the eventual development of the ADFC now located on Al Maryah Island, which has been designated the capital’s first Financial Free Zone. This new location provides an opportunity for more development area, and stronger connections for the new CBD connecting the existing Island of Abu Dhabi, Sadiyat Island and beyond.
