This existing shopping centre is located within central Ballina and is neighboured by two other sub-regional centres. The goal was to establish a unique identity, character and point of difference from the adjacent centres.
Our strategy was to explore the coastal character of the area and to disseminate it into the design of the refurbishment of the centre.
The new design components reflect this coastal aesthetic by incorporating textures and layers in the form of blades and screens, comprising of white timber battens and panels.
A new landscaping strategy was developed as a key component to the reinterpreted character of the centre, creating a lush tropical environment. A ‘Floral Screen’ was developed using vertical planting of bougainvillea, and suspended flower baskets were incorporated reflecting the casual nature of the beachside aesthetic. The crisp white building elements provide a clean contrast to the proposed lush tropical landscaping strategy.
Two new pavilion structures were added within the existing surrounds to function as kiosks, and therefore enhancing the beachside narrative and identity for the centre.
